this is really fun
yes there is knitting
the Knitting Companion has
been a big help with the Hand knits this month.
we've been working in
cotton,
cotton blends,
wool,
wool and cashmere blends
and more wool.
Oh. and i've even followed a pattern.
that's rare and probably won't happen again
for a while.
You can see a bit of the Knitting Companion
boy in the top two photos. He's relaxing. He
knows the importance of being well rested.

No longer a geranium
Aha !
thanks to talented Sue
for the botanical scoop.
the tall, lanky plant is no
longer a mysterious Geranium
but a Begonia.
Hmm.
i had no idea they could be so tall.
more october outside ...
this fern, seen above,
lives in a very nice,
tall shapely container in the back yard.
Sadly, it's not doing as well as i would hope.
I suppose it needs a lot more of
... something to make it look pretty and fernly.
That could mean i need to be
watering a lot more frequently.
It's certainly not a case of
being burnt by too much light.
and below, you see one of my
favourite plant containers.
This terra cotta has moved house with me
many times.
I love the shape of this pot.
october views
Some outside, October views.
The
"back yard" or garden, is quite
tiny and covered over with a ground
level decking. The Knitting Companion
does not find much to interest him
in the "garden" in the
sights or smells department.
Below you can see some sort
of Geranium plant that is quite high.
It has just sprouted some flowers - the
first for the year.
In the back ground you can see the
Knitting Companion. My
container-garden is quite limited.
a rather poetic curl
from a mystery plant (a tree? a shrub?
a nicely manicured Vine ? ).
This plant has a sense of humour
about where and how to grow new viney shoots.
word for today ...

sleeps as in a mine,
until an equal mind and heart
finds and publishes it."

overuse leads to other issues
Of course, when you're relying
heavily on a particular hair accessory,
it goes to reason that you'll either
lose your accessory or it will break.
Due to my
recent Unfortunate Hair Style,
i've been relying on a hair clip.
Yesterday it broke.
from overuse.
So, today i've been trying out
alternative hair strategies.
I've been trying out a red hat
that i bought some time ago in France.
(Bordeaux to be specific)
I'm not sure if i'm looking:
1. jaunty and arty
2. like someone trying to hide
an unfortunate hair cut with a
hat that's better seen on someone else
3. like Miss Marple
or,
4. Like some sort of a kook.
hmmmm.
and wouldn't it be nice if Hair Salons
were still called "Beauty Parlours" ?
i think this is such a
fun name. Beauty Parlour.
Try saying it out loud.
Really, it's fun.
a Giant Octopus
well, there's a title
that i never thought i'd be writing:
A Giant Octopus.
but yes, it's true.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium (click for link)
has a Giant Octopus.
I've never been to this Aquarium, but i've
heard terrific things about it.
and, the Aquarium
has all kinds of web cams that you can
see. They are on Pacific time (GMT - 8),
so keep that in mind when you're visiting
the web cams.
Here is a link for the Web cams:
http://www.mbayaq.org/efc/cam_menu.asp
this is also a link for their podcasts.
oh, there's even a Penguin cam
& an otter cam.
(i'm sure there's a good joke in there,
but i'm not feeling
too sharp or witty right now).

time for a little catch up ...
This year, it's been fun
to share with you some of my favourite things.
In the meantime, there have
been a lot of Not Favourite things happening,
but of course that is how life goes. for everyone.
September had its share of Life Events.
I am mourning the passing of a very
special, long time friend.
Marjorie was a fascinating, interesting
and amazingly stylish woman.
She will be missed by many.
On a shiny and wonderfully
happy note, a great friend
has just had a baby.
Congratulations to Mona!
You can click here, to see photos
of Mona's lovely bundle of joy.
September also had its share
of life's .... interesting challenges,
such as plumbing gone awry.
Questions arose such as ...
why doesn't the water come out?
and: How much DOES it cost to
hire a plumber ?
So to illustrate my
plumbing excitement,
this is what the wall looks
like without the plumbing "hardware".
and lets always hope that the
plumbers can get to the problem
without having to break open the tiles on
the wall.
Oh, and by the way,
in case you really do wonder:
it's $175.00 for a plumber
to come to your house, and $175.00 for
every lovely hour that they spend at your house.

don't look now ...
my September was host to one of
those "oh no" life events.
Not something serious, life-ending
or life shattering.
But rather, something
that alters your day to day Life.
a Bad Haircut.
a VERY bad hair cut.
so bad in fact, that i don't leave the house
without my hair pinned up/back... or
without a hat.
Luckily for me, the temperatures afford
a possibility of wearing adequate head
covering.
No i will not be posting photos
of the bad haircut.
but you know it's
bad when the tactful person
you live with suggests that you "find
a new hairstylist right away". And on
the day of the offending haircut asks
if you've been out looking for a new salon yet.
(ouch).
